Messages for a pet that has died

When a pet dies, the house goes quiet and it can be hard to find the words, whether you want to say goodbye or comfort a friend. Here you will find messages written for both, which you can filter by who they are for and by animal, and a few simple ways to say goodbye.

Their grief is real

An animal is not “just a dog” or “just a cat”. It is the one who waited at the door, who knew your routines better than anyone, who was there on the bad days without asking anything. And yet this grief often goes unrecognised. A study of pet bereavement counselling published in the journal Omega found that society tends to play down companion animals, and that grieving owners were often expected to get over it quickly or simply get another pet. You don’t need to justify your grief, to yourself or to anyone.

Words to say goodbye, or to comfort someone

Choose who the message is for and the animal, and copy the one that sounds like you. Change whatever you like: add their name, a habit, a place you used to go together.

  • Thank you for every single day you chose to be by my side.
  • The house is so quiet without you. I keep listening for you.
  • You weren’t almost family. You were family.
  • I would go through this pain again for every year I had with you.
  • Rest now. You looked after me long enough.
  • You taught me that love can be simple: being there, every day.
  • I still look for you when I open the door.
  • No more walks together, but every path I take still has you on it.
  • Your lead is on its hook. I can’t move it yet, and that’s all right.
  • Nobody ever waited for me the way you did.
  • You wagged your tail until the very end. I’ll try to be that brave.
  • My sofa still has your shape in it.
  • You chose my lap, and I always felt honoured.
  • I miss your purring at night more than I can say.
  • You came into my life on your own terms and left it full of you.
  • There’s a patch of sun on the floor this morning, and it’s waiting for you.
  • Small as you were, you filled the whole room.
  • People didn’t always understand what you meant to me. I did.
  • Your cage is empty, but my heart isn’t.
  • Goodbye, little friend. You were loved more than you ever knew.
  • I hope I gave you a life half as happy as the one you gave me.
  • Forgive me for the times I was in a hurry. You never were with me.
  • You were there on my worst days and never asked for anything in return.
  • I’ll keep your collar where I can see it, and you where I can feel you.
  • Today I planted something for you. It will grow, like what you left me.
  • Run free now. No more pain, only open fields.
  • I’m so sorry. I know how much they meant to you.
  • They were lucky to have you, and you were lucky to have them.
  • Losing a pet is losing family. Take all the time you need.
  • Thinking of you and of all the love you gave them.
  • I’ll always remember how happy they were to see you.
  • If you want to talk about them, I’d love to listen.
  • You gave them a good life and a gentle goodbye. That is a gift.
  • Your grief is the size of your love. It makes complete sense.
  • No more walks, I know. Shall we go for one together, in their honour?
  • That dog adored you. It was obvious to everyone.
  • I’ll miss the way they ran to the door when I came round.
  • Cats don’t give their love to just anyone. They gave it to you.
  • I’ll miss seeing them curled up on your windowsill.
  • However small they were, the hole they leave isn’t small.
  • I know they were a real friend to you. I’m so sorry.
  • Sending you a hug. The first days are the hardest.
  • Don’t let anyone tell you it was “just a pet”.
  • If you need someone to sit with you tonight, I can come over.
  • Do you have a favourite photo of them? I’d love to see it.
  • They knew they were loved. You made sure of that every day.
  • It was a hard decision, and you made it out of love.
  • I’m thinking of the whole family, the children too.

Small ways to say goodbye

A goodbye does not have to be big to be true. Some ideas that help many people:

If there are children at home

Children often lose their first friend when a pet dies, and they notice everything. Tell them the truth with simple words: that the animal has died, that its body has stopped working and it will not come back. Phrases like “it went to sleep” or “it ran away” can frighten or confuse them. Let them ask, let them cry, and let them take part in the goodbye: drawing a picture, choosing the photo or helping plant the flowers. There is more on this in how to talk to a child about death.

A star for them

You can light a star in A shared universe for the animal you have lost. Tap “Light your star”, choose “What weighs on me”, or “What I’m grateful for” if you want to give thanks for the years you had together, and say it shines for someone who is gone. Write up to 280 characters without names. It shines for seven days, and other people will keep you company with a few kind words. If you have also lost a person and want words for them, look at messages for a loved one in heaven.
