A star for those you have lost

Remembering someone who is gone · 2 min read

On 1 and 2 November many people go to the cemetery, take flowers and light a candle. If you cannot go this year, or if you want to do it from where you are as well, here you can light a star for someone who is gone. Others will see it shine and keep it company with you.

Two days for remembering

1 November is All Saints’ Day and 2 November is All Souls’ Day. In Mexico and other countries of the Americas it is the Day of the Dead. Each place keeps it in its own way, but the gesture is the same: saying that we have not forgotten them.

How to light it

  1. Go to compartiendo.org and tap “Light your star”.
  2. Choose “What weighs on me”, or “What I’m grateful for” if you want to give thanks for their life.
  3. Under “Who does it shine for?”, choose “For someone who is gone”.
  4. Write what you want to say to them or tell, without their name or yours.
  5. It shines for seven days. If you come back when it has less than one left, you can keep it shining seven more days.

The moon that day

In the menu, “The sky on a date” shows you the moon on the night that person left, or on the night they were born. The date is not saved and does not leave your device.

What people will tell you

Anyone who sees your star can leave you words like these:

If these days are hard

Special dates stir things up. In Spain you can talk to a person at the Teléfono de la Esperanza, 717 003 717, at any time. If you are thinking of ending your life, call 024: it is free and answered 24 hours a day. If you are in another country, call your local emergency number or a helpline there.
